Marvin Charles Schlecte, MD

Marvin Charles Schlecte is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has been with Waco Eye Associates since 1978 and has helped to grow Waco Eye to become

the premier center for eye care in the Waco area. 

 

Dr. Schlecte grew up in Plainview, Texas where both of his parents were M.D.’s. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He was

a member of Eta Kappa Nu electrical engineering honor society as well as Tau Beta Pi, the all-engineering honor society. He then graduated medical school from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and completed an internship at Scott and White Hospital in Temple. Dr. Schlecte went through his ophthalmology

training at the University of Tennessee in Memphis and

came to Waco in 1978 after finishing his residency. 

 

Dr. Schlecte and his wife, Diane, enjoy golf and their three grandkids, and they are active in St. Louis Church in Waco.  Dr. Schlecte particularly enjoys being able to come to work every day and have the opportunity to practice medicine with his son Marvin Charles (Charlie) Schlecte III M.D.

John Liu, MD 

Dr. Liu is a comprehensive Ophthalmologist who has been providing exceptional medical and surgical eye care to patients at Waco Eye Associates since 1989.  Known for his precision, extensive clinical experience, and commitment to excellence, he has dedicated his career to helping patients achieve their best possible vision and eye health.

Dr. Liu grew up in Tyler, Texas, graduated with highest academic honors/summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Texas at Austin in 1979.  He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1983, followed by a one-year internship at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin.  He was Chief Resident during his Ophthalmology residency at UTMB Galveston.   He concluded his post-graduate medical training with a 2-year fellowship in Cataract and Refractive Surgery under the direction of Douglas D. Koch, M.D. at Cullen Eye Institute/Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Dr. Liu is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.  He has been an author of numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.

In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his extended family and his 2 new grandchildren.

John Quinius, MD 

John Quinius is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has practiced comprehensive ophthalmology in Waco for more than 30 years, treating both medical and surgical diseases of the eye. He is committed to providing outstanding care to everyone he treats. 

 

Dr. Quinius was born and raised in Waco. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Southwestern University in Georgetown with

a degree in Economics. He attended the University of Texas School of Law in Austin and then Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed a diversified internship in Internal Medicine as well as his residency in Ophthalmology at Scott and White in Temple. 

 

Dr. Quinius has been honored by his peers by being selected

to “Best Doctors in America” as well as the local community by being named in “Best in Waco.” He is a member of numerous organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Texas Ophthalmological Association, the Texas Medical Association, and the McLennan County Medical Association.  

 

When not involved in his practice, Dr. Quinius enjoys spending time with his wife and family, particularly his five grandchildren.  He is an avid freshwater and saltwater fly-fisherman.

Bryce Shutt, MD 

Bryce Shutt is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has been with Waco Eye Associates since 2003.  

 

Dr. Shutt was born in Big Spring, TX to a military family and settled in Amarillo for his junior high and high school years

where he graduated at the top of his class in 1983.  

 

He then attended Baylor University on a National Merit Scholarship and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts

in Chemistry in 1987. While there, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.  He then attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine on an Air Force Health Professions Scholarship and graduated in 1991. Following medical school, Dr. Shutt moved to Little Rock, AR for a transitional internship followed by a four-year ophthalmology residency, which he completed in 1996.  

 

After residency, Dr. Shutt was active duty in the United States Air Force where he began his military career by earning the Commissioned Officer Training School Curtis E. LeMay Top Graduate Award and finished his USAF career in 2001 with the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service. He then moved back to Waco and worked at Scott & White for a year and a half until joining Waco Eye Associates. He is an Active Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He takes great pride in caring for his patients and enjoys spending time with his friends and family.

Charlie Schlecte, MD 

Charlie Schlecte is a comprehensive ophthalmologist
who is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has been with Waco Eye Associates since 2007.

​

After being raised in Waco, Dr. Schlecte attended the University of Notre Dame where he graduated Magna
Cum Laude in 1999. From there he pursued his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, graduating with High Honors in 2003. While in Galveston, he was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He then went on to complete his Ophthalmology Residency in Dallas at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Schlecte is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Texas Ophthalmological Association, and the Texas Medical Association. He has been very active within the McLennan County Medical Society as well, serving as their president in 2014.

Dr. Schlecte and his wife enjoy spending time with their
three children and traveling. 

Patrick Harkins, MD 

Patrick Harkins is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has been with Waco Eye Associates since 2010.

 

Dr. Harkins was raised in Jackson, Mississippi.  He completed undergraduate education with a degree in Biochemistry from Ole Miss and continued his medical school training at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.  His residency training in Ophthalmology was performed at Louisiana State University Medical Center and Oshsner Foundation in New Orleans, Louisiana.

 

As a comprehensive ophthalmologist Dr. Harkins treats a large variety of medical and surgical problems of the eye.  His focus is on cataract surgery including the use of premium intraocular lens implants, as well as eyelid surgery including blepharoplasty, ectropion and entropion repair.  He lives in Waco with his wife
Allison and two children.

Matthew Gillings, MD

Matthew Gillings is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He joined Waco Eye Associates in 2024.


Dr. Gillings was raised in Plano, Texas. He completed undergraduate education with a degree in Biochemistry from The University of Texas at Dallas, graduating with the highest academic honors at the top of his class. He received his medical school training at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. After completing an internship at WellStar Kennestone Regional Medical Center in Marietta, Georgia, he returned to The University of Texas Southwestern for his ophthalmology residency training where he served as a chief resident.
 

As a comprehensive ophthalmologist, Dr. Gillings treats a large variety of medical and surgical problems of the eye. He has a particular interest in cataract surgery including the use of premium intraocular lens implants and glaucoma disease management including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.

​

Dr. Gillings possesses conversational proficiency in Spanish and is committed to fostering clear communication and comfort for Spanish-speaking patients.


Outside of work, Dr. Gillings enjoys living in Waco with his wife and son, engaging with community through church, and playing pickleball.

Rhonda Banister, Office Manager 

​Rhonda is the friendly face and steady hand that keeps Waco Eye Associates running with precision and care. With years of experience in ophthalmology office management, she ensures every patient visit is seamless—from scheduling and insurance coordination to maintaining a welcoming environment for all. Known for her professionalism and warmth, Rhonda takes pride in helping our patients feel at ease and making sure our team delivers the best possible eye care experience.
